Reconstruction  In this C-G image, we can see Bance Island House and the Merchant's Dormitory from the same vantage point. We can also see the Gate-Tower and the road that connected it to the jetty. When slave ships arrived, the British traders led their captives from the slave yards through the gate, then half-way to the jetty where they shackled them, and finally to the end of the jetty where they put them aboard small boats that took them out to the ships anchored in deep water. Archaeologists recently discovered a shackle at the half-way point between the Gate Tower and the jetty. It was a U-shaped piece of iron with loops at the ends, sealed by an iron spike driven through the loops..
